Additional Information

Google and YouTube have agreed to pay $30 million to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging that they improperly collected personal information from children under the age of 13 who watched videos on YouTube.

According to the lawsuit, YouTube knowingly hosted content aimed at young viewers while collecting data from underage users without obtaining verifiable parental consent. Plaintiffs argued that these practices violated children’s privacy rights under several laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

The case focused on channels featuring child-oriented videos such as cartoons, nursery rhymes, toy unboxings, and similar content. The complaint alleged that Google used cookies and other tracking technologies to monitor viewing behavior and deliver targeted advertising—actions that are restricted when it comes to children’s data.

Google and YouTube have denied the allegations but agreed to the settlement to avoid further legal proceedings. The resolution comes amid heightened regulatory attention and growing concern over online privacy protections for children.

What Class Members May Receive

Parents or legal guardians who submit a valid claim on behalf of an eligible child may receive a cash payment. Individual payout amounts have not yet been determined and will depend on the total number of approved claims.

All approved claims will be paid from the $30 million settlement fund, with compensation divided evenly among eligible claimants. At this time, there are no estimates for per-person payment amounts.
