Additional Information
Shimano North America Bicycle and Shimano North America Holding have reached a settlement to address claims involving certain bicycle cranksets manufactured before July 2019. The lawsuit alleged that specific cranksets—primarily from Shimano’s Ultegra and Dura-Ace product lines—were vulnerable to delamination or separation, creating potential safety risks for riders.
According to the complaint, Shimano was allegedly aware of the defect but continued selling the affected cranksets without adequately warning consumers. Plaintiffs claimed that this issue could cause sudden loss of control while riding, potentially leading to serious injuries.
In 2023, Shimano initiated a voluntary recall covering the impacted cranksets. The recall, along with this class action settlement, is intended to address the reported safety concerns. While Shimano has denied any liability, the company agreed to resolve the claims to avoid further litigation.
What Class Members May Receive
Eligible class members may qualify for the following benefits:
Reimbursement for Replacement Costs:
Consumers who replaced a crankset due to delamination or separation may be eligible for reimbursement of reasonable out-of-pocket expenses related to the purchase and installation of a replacement crankset.
Extended Warranty Coverage:
Shimano will extend the original warranty on affected cranksets through July 29, 2027, limited specifically to issues involving bonding separation or delamination.
Improved Inspection Program:
Participating retailers will receive enhanced inspection equipment—such as improved lighting and magnification tools—along with updated inspection procedures and guidance.
